Dhaka/New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent social media post has sparked criticism and tension between India and Bangladesh. In his post, Modi referred to India as “just an ally, nothing more” when discussing its role in Bangladesh’s Liberation War of 1971.
Bangladesh Reacts Strongly
Many in Bangladesh saw the comment as dismissive of India’s key role in their independence.
“India’s support in 1971 was not just an alliance. It was a shared struggle that created a deep bond between our nations,” said Dr. Rezaul Karim, a historian from Dhaka.
While the ruling Awami League remained careful in its response, opposition leaders criticized the statement. BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir remarked, “This shows India views us as nothing more than a strategic interest.”
India Responds
India’s Ministry of External Affairs quickly clarified that Modi’s words were misinterpreted.
“The Prime Minister’s intent was not to downplay India-Bangladesh relations. India values its close partnership with Bangladesh,” an official explained.
A History of Friendship
India and Bangladesh have shared close ties since India’s military, humanitarian, and diplomatic support during Bangladesh’s 1971 independence war. Over the years, the two nations have built strong cooperation in trade, water sharing, and regional security.
However, tensions have surfaced from time to time over border issues, the unresolved Teesta water-sharing deal, and China’s growing influence in Bangladesh.
Social Media Outcry
The comment triggered strong reactions on social media in Bangladesh, with hashtags like #NotJustAnAlly and #Respect1971 trending. Many users shared images from the 1971 Liberation War, calling for respect and acknowledgment of shared sacrifices.
Prominent journalist Mahfuz Anam wrote, “Diplomatic relationships need care and respect. Words matter, especially on sensitive historical topics.”
Looking Ahead
Despite the uproar, analysts believe the controversy will not cause long-term damage. India remains Bangladesh’s largest regional trade partner, and both nations rely on each other for economic and security cooperation.
Efforts to ease tensions are already underway. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka is working with Bangladeshi officials to clarify Modi’s statement and reinforce India’s commitment to strong ties.
The incident highlights how sensitive historical issues remain, even in otherwise strong partnerships.
