Former Karnataka CM S M Krishna Passes Away

Former Karnataka CM S M Krishna Passes Away on Tuesday (December 10) morning at his residence in Bengaluru. He breathed his last at 2:45 AM. Krishna served as Karnataka’s Chief Minister from October 11, 1999, to May 20, 2004, and as the Governor of Maharashtra from December 6, 2004, to March 8, 2008.

His last rites will be performed with full state honours at his native in Mandya district on Wednesday.

Former Krishna had been unwell for a long time. Senior leaders across the country expressed their condolences on his demise, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Priyank Kharge, among others.

Prime Minister Modi also expressed his condolences, remembering Krishna’s dedication to public welfare. “S M Krishna was an exceptional leader who earned the admiration of people from all walks of life. He worked tirelessly to improve lives and focused on developing infrastructure as Karnataka’s Chief Minister. A great reader and thinker,” Modi wrote in a post on X.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu remembered his association with senior Congress leader and former Karnataka CM S M Krishna. Expressing his condolences, Chandrababu shared a post on social media

“I am deeply saddened to hear about the demise of former Karnataka CM S M Krishna. Our friendship turned into healthy competition to attract investments to our states. He was a true leader who always prioritized the welfare of his people. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Priyank Kharge expressed his condolences on social media, saying:

“I am deeply saddened by the demise of S M Krishna. As a Chief Minister and leader, he left an indelible mark on the state and the nation. His dedication guided Karnataka on the path of progress. His vision for Bengaluru made him a beloved figure for many. The benefits of his efforts to make Bengaluru a global city are still evident today and will continue to inspire future generations.”

Personal life:

S M Krishna’s full name was Somannahalli Mallaiah Krishna. He was born on May 1, 1932, in Somannahalli village, Maddur taluk. He completed his primary and undergraduate education in Mysore and studied law at the Government Law College in Bengaluru. Krishna began his political career as an MLA from Maddur, winning as an independent candidate in 1962. He was married to Prema 1964.
S M Krishna, widely recognized for his passion for tennis, also had a flair for creativity. He enjoyed designing men’s clothing and was an avid reader.

S M Krishna’s daughter Malavika Krishna is married to V.G. Siddartha, the founder of Café Coffee Day, while his other daughter, Shambhavi, is married to Umesh Hingorani, the stepbrother of Vijay Mallya.

Few people are aware that Malavika Krishna, daughter of the late S M Krishna, Karnataka’s former Chief Minister, was married to V.G. Siddhartha, the founder of Café Coffee Day. Siddhartha turned CCD into India’s top coffee chain, establishing 1,700 outlets across the country. However, his success was overshadowed by mounting financial struggles. The company accumulated a massive debt of ₹7,000 crores, leaving Siddhartha deeply distressed and unable to find a way to rescue his business.

In July 2019, V.G. Siddhartha tragically ended his life by jumping into the Netravati River. His death, caused by the overwhelming ₹7,000 crore debt, left his wife, Malavika Krishna, heartbroken. S M Krishna, his father-in-law, was deeply shocked and stressed by the loss. Siddhartha’s passing was especially hard on his young sons, Ishaan and Amartya, who were just children at the time, making it a devastating and traumatic experience for the family.
